Why Community-led resilience is important

Community-led resilience is important because people need to be able to rely on their community to help them if the need should arise and to be a support system for each other. Additionally for communities to be effectively resilient, they need to develop a resiliency strategy that reflects the local context and responds to their unique historical and social characteristics.

Recent bushfires in Southern NSW have greatly affected local businesses and the experiences of these business owners has highlighted the need to build a culture of disaster risk reduction, preparedness, recovery and resilience in their everyday conversations and interactions.

So from June 2021, we are assisting over 13,000 businesses in Southern NSW to build resilience through implementing programs funded by the NSW Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience Fund (BCRRF) grant>.

Strengthening local connections and resilience capability

‘Building Resilient Business Communities’ is an 18 month project focused on empowering local businesses and business chambers in the Southern LGA remit to better prepare, connect and build resilience to current and future impacts.

Our work includes:

  • facilitating a multi-stakeholder working group including business chamber members and non-member businesses, councils, emergency services, local non-profits, media and other key groups;
  • assisting the multi-stakeholder group to co-design a strategic content roadmap aligning with local and global policy blueprints;
  • issuing fortnightly content outreach to participants with data captured to identify capabilities and gaps; and
  • assisting with the development of local-led events to help build stronger connections across the business community.

The outcome will deliver more resilient businesses, strengthen community connections through business chambers and provide data to enable local and State governments to identify gaps in preparedness, recovery and resilience in business communities across the region.

If you are a business or business chamber located in the Local Government Areas of Bega Valley Shire Council, Eurobodalla Shire Council, Goulburn Mulwaree Council, Queanbeyan-
Palerang Regional Council, Shoalhaven City Council, Snowy Monaro Regional Council please register your interest to be part of the program.
