This summer I did something that I haven’t done in a really, really long time.

I took three and a half weeks off work – which is really hard to do when you’re running your own business.

In order to enable me to have this time off, I had to really focus on setting up effective processes and systems in my business.

It took me almost 6 months of preparation. And it was worth it.

Rest and rejuvenation is part of resilience

After over four years of running corporate2community, why did I feel that I needed to take this break?

To be honest, the last two years have taken a pretty big personal toll.

I care deeply about this thing called resilience and my passion is to work with businesses, government departments and philanthropic organisations to help them become more resilient – so that they create more impact for the communities they serve.

Combined with lockdowns, compounding disasters and the changes to my business, it has been hard, emotional work.

It was also important for me to spend time with my family. Heading down to the beach over January, I completed a 1000 piece Lego puzzle much to the excitement of my three little boys who knew all the names of all the Lego pieces.

Taking a break brings clarity and focus

Having the time off has given me a chance to consider the direction that corporate2community is heading towards in 2022.

Gave me back a sense of what I’m doing. And why I’m doing it.

I’ve had the chance to reflect on why my work is so important and consider how to best communicate my knowledge and expertise about how to do disasters differently.

At corporate2community, we teach that people are the foundation to resilience. So this summer it was really important for me to walk my own talk – to commit to building my own resilience – and spend time re-energising myself for all that’s coming in 2022.

Now ask yourself, are you taking regular breaks away from your business?
